Hope That Holds.

My mom and my uncle grew up in a small suburb in the Rust Belt. Their dad, my grandfather, drove a truck. Their mother was the daughter of Polish immigrants. Their family was Catholic. My mom was the first in her family to go to college, and it was a small Catholic college. She was first a stay-at-home mother to a large number of children and then a nurse. She still lives in the same state, but is now about as left-wing as you can imagine a kindly pious retired lady could be. I can't say she despises Trump, because I don't think she despises anybody, but she sure doesn't like him. Hillary all the way for her. (And, my goodness. I remember being told at the dinner table as a young teen that gay people were "called to celibacy." Now she's all IF THE OTHER ANGLICANS WON'T DO GAY MARRIAGE LET'S GET THIS SCHISM GOING!!!!) Meanwhile, her brother moved to California, got a better-paying job, and matured into a racist prick. Admittedly I have not asked him, but it's almost a lock that he's supporting Trump.
So, yeah. It's not like there's some miasma in the Rust Belt or Southern air that compels you to be a flaming bigot with shockingly poor judgment. You can struggle financially, and live in a financially struggling place, and not lose your mind to evil. (And that's without the evidence showing that the median Trump household income is higher than either Hillary or Bernie households--that "poor downtrodden" schtick seems to be at least half-powered by weird upper-class guilt making people fall for a just-so story...)
