After a long meeting with someone whose entire job is to figure these things out (and who, btw, was hands-down the most relaxed and friendly university administrator I've dealt with at any school; usually the bureaucratic layer of academia is positively soul-killing, but Rita is the bee's knees), I am DEFINITELY ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT GRADUATING IN FOUR WEEKS.
There is still some small confusion about whether my degree will be mailed to me promptly afterwards, or if I'll have to wait a month or two to get all officialized. However, apparently commencement is pretty much a complete sham (did you know they don't even have your last semester's *grades* yet? I could have spent the last four months in Jamaica and still show up to graduate!), so I'm IN. They're putting my name in the program and everything.
Always assuming Louis MacNeice doesn't send me to an early grave, of course.
(I feel vaguely sad for professors who are currently urging me to demonstrate my "critical perspective" on this or that poem. I am graduating in four weeks. I do not have a critical perspective. I won't even like poetry again until May 14.)

Date: 2006-04-12 12:56 pm (UTC)From:My current GPA qualifies me for magna cum laude, but after my expected 4.0 this semester, I will be in summa cum laude territory. Of course, they won't have those numbers yet, so I'll still be announced as magna at commencement. I mean, jeez, they might as well punch me in the face! Can you believe it?
Oh, and congrats on the upcoming graduation and all ;).

It totally is. But nobody wants to wait a week between the last day of finals and a commencement ceremony. Everything must be done RIGHT AWAY so graduates can drive directly from the campus to the airport.
If your institution is anything like mine, the lag time in diploma mailing is so financial services can check on everybody's records. Once grades are done, degrees can usually be issued immediately, but most schools have to make sure everybody's paid their bills, done their loan exit interviews, etc.
And yay for you! Congratulations!

Date: 2006-04-12 01:40 pm (UTC)From:The whole cap-and-gown thing is actually feeling like more of a huge drag than anything else, and I'm leaning toward not going. I mean, standing in a stadium with fifteen thousand of my closest friends just does not thrill, somehow. The English department does its own graduation thing the night before, and I think I'm just going to take my parents and Mary to that, let 'em meet some professors and some people I actually took classes with and all.
Also, thanks! *g*
