I have disabled anonymous commenting on this journal. I've been thinking about doing that for some time now, because I've been getting a rash of irritating advertising spam popping up in the comments to ancient entries, which generally pisses me off.

There's a populist part of me that dislikes doing this, but honestly. LJ is a free service. If you honestly care that much about engaging with me on any particular subject, you'll still care five minutes from now after you've registered for your free username. And if you're an advertiser, maybe you'll go bother someone else instead. And if you're a troll, I suppose you'll move a step up the food chain to "sockpuppet" instead.

I disabled anonymous commenting in my LJ because of the spam too, and then the semi-regular trolls I get for one of my posts on female characters in comics, started to rant at me that I "made them" get an LJ... I'd be happier about this power if I at least got some bonus from LJ for making people sign up with my apparent mindcontrol skillz, like say a few extra icon slots.

Hmmm....

I've never gotten any advertising spam, and I don't write on interesting enough topics to be trolled, but I also disabled anonymous comments just because I think if you've got something to say, you put your name on it (like Sam Seaborn). Even if it's a made-up name.

Also I support any attempt at encouraging civility on the net. From a sociology standpoint, I love to watch net users make and abide by their own rules. It's endlessly fascinating, isn't it?
