I think -- if I've learned one thing from Fandom over the years! -- that the intent of a speaker/writer/author means something...but less than the speaker/writer/author usually thinks it means. *g* I don't discount the intent behind words, not entirely. But nor do I think the right answer -- in *any* circumstance -- is to fall back on, "Well, I'm the speaker/writer/author, and if you're not hearing it the way I meant it, you need to change how you hear!" Not that you're saying that...but I think some people kind of are, and it makes me inclined to respond to any discussion of "what we mean" with a big, rousing, I do not give a damn. *g* What people SAY means at least as much as what they MEAN, and arguably much more.
and, of course, what bugs me most of all, that it's OK for male characters to relate romantically, sexually, or both to other males. Just as long as they don't, you know, make a habit of that sort of thing.
Wow. I can't recall EVER reading fic or meta coming from the slash community that I received that way. That's interesting. My experience has been that slashers much *prefer* their BSOs to make a habit of it. *g*
