So. I think I've reas this story five or six times in the past eight mos. Every time I think I've got a handle on why it appeals, it slithers away from me.
I don't think I have more than a mild bondage kink, and I only partly feel how D/s could be so compelling to people who need it. My understanding is so shallow.
But the part of me that does want to inflict pain "gets" how Ray can fall into the role Fraser desires. Would I have predicted that a sadistic Ray would appeal? Never. But I can see him going along with Fraser and finding out that it works for him.
All in all, I think this is one of the best-written depictions of kink taken seriously that I've read, and I like best how you take into account the canon characters' personalities and make it credible rather than titillating. Although, you know, it is hot. So on one level it works as porn.
Anyway, because these desires aren't mine, I don't know how "accurate" this is from that POV, but seriously, this is a great example of a story that works on multiple levels.
