Heh, no, I haven't read it-- I haven't read much of her later stuff, The Other Wind disappointed me so much that I've been looking at other stuff instead. I guess the thing about the kemmerhouses, at least in tLHoD, is that they're perfectly accepted by society, so they didn't seem to me to be queer in that cultural context, although by ours they are. And note though that Therem won't use them, which emphasises his outsiderness.
Genly is preaching your line, that his alien maleness and femaleness are entirely outside Gethenian experience, but yes, I think after his adeventure in Orgoreyn he began to accept the Gethenian view. And I think Therem is the only Gethenian who comes close to approaching his view-- the Orgota and Gethenian rulers consistently refer to his people as perverts when they're around Therem, and part of their trouble in dealing with Genly is that he refuses to fit their stereotype.
