And yeah, one of the things that I'd been thinking for a long time but has really come out through writing this is that when I argue that slash is queer, I think the *least* of what I'm saying is that the characters in the stories are queer. That's irrelevant -- what I'm saying is that the worldview and the desires being expressed by the writers/fans are queer, that they constitute a frontal assault on the idea that heterosexuality is more legitimate or more natural, or normative in any way other than statistically, than any other form of sexual expression. That, to me, is the queerness of it, and the characters are our chesspieces in that -- consciously or unconsciously. (Mary, by the way, thinks my theory is rubbish, so thank you for liking it *g*)
