Yeah, I kind of suspect it is another projection of Gen X writers. I was about Stiles' age when I figured out I was bisexual, and I do remember it coming as quite a surprise. But the culture has changed quite a lot in the 20+ years since then, and I think what was totally believable circa 1993 just comes off weirdly now.
(Also, now I totally believe that Scott is in denial about sushi.)
