o, season 3! -- so near, and yet so far

There are new promo pictures for season 3 at New Atlantis. The first one is eminently forgettable, but the second one has caused a great gladness in my heart and loins. Er. Well, it has, dammit!

Things I have to say about this picture:

1) Ronon's crazy Road Warrior Gloves of Doom: baffling or completely fucking hot? Let's go with both.

2) Elizabeth continues to look monumentally cooler in promotional pictures than she ever actually is on the show. Where are they keeping this character, and who's using her office? We need a Free Elizabeth Weir! campaign.

3) Rodney's kinda turning me on, here. I think because he looks like a freaking grown-up, which is the Rodney I prefer to the Spastic Dweeb Man-Child Rodney who occasionally shows up to poke me with sticks -- psychically, I mean. Well, that's how it feels! This guy can stay.

4) Sheppard should always, always, always wear jeans. I know, uniform, military, whatever. Like his hair *is* regulation? There should be special Congressional dispensation. Oh, come on, they're not fucking doing anything useful; they've got the time.

5) Teyla looks like she has Layers. I approve. I also think it's cool when they don't make the hot chick in the belly shirt stand right up front so we can't possibly miss her -- although I fear that has less to do with their profound feminist commitment to avoiding the objectification of Teyla's character, and more to do with the fact that, as far as I can tell, only chicks watch Atlantis. Nonetheless, I approve. Unless they're going to let her go back to wearing that strippy skirt from 1st season. In which case I want her back up front, for all the pictures. My feminism does not trump that.

I'm going for "baffling" on the gauntlets, and I also think his beard is less attractive than it was. OTOH, I've been looking at the spoilery episode pics, and he's looking pretty damn fine in some of those.

I notice there's a bit more muscle definition in the pic on the left than what I'm used to from S2. That makes me sad, actually. There's a point where an appearance of strength changes into an appearance of spending too much damn time in the gym and dieting to cut body fat. Mind you, it's probably airbrushed in that particular picture ;) And it'll grow on me. I used to think Ronon walked funny, in a muscle-bound way... now I'm convinced it's a "just fucked" way.

Another one for the Baffling or Kinda Hot? debate. Ronon is the kind of guy who, no matter how much women's apparel you put him in, will always look like a dude in women's clothes. I mean, a *pretty* dude in women's clothes! I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Actually, I think the combination of that inherent masculinity and the satin gloves (pearl necklace/lipstick/black silk panties/fake eyelashes/whatever) that makes it kind of kicky.

Yeah, they always look a lot sleeker and shinier in the promo pics than in real life. If not airbrushing, I'm sure they're lit and made up to within an inch of their lives. I know it's all fake as hell, but it works on me anyway, for I am a sheep. Also, it kind of gives me warm, nostalgic memories of my days in popslash, where everything looks like that.

Well, I looked at the first picture anyway, and now I wonder: Did they change their regular uniforms to all black with leather jackets?! Not that that would be a bad choice per se, but a bit unusual, also it's plain odd for them to change uniform design so often.

I'm really pleased with Teyla being in actual uniform, complete with full length shirt. And she's got the red patches -- that's administration and diplomacy? However, her moving into the formal Atlantis command structure leave leaves Ronon to be the Oddly-Dressed-Native-Guide now. He's not exactly one with the cool and informative, you know what I mean?

Well, I do know that drag queens use bronzer shading to enhance the appearance of cleavage (one of the many things my mother wonders how I know, I'm sure). So I bet it could be done! I'm sure there's a highly intricate science governing the cosmetics of bodybuilding competitions; for any competition, there are people who are more than willing to put just that much work into taking it entirely too seriously.

I'm not completely sure that promo pictures are always meant to show the actual working wardrobe of the characters. It seems to me (and I may be making this up), that sometimes they just get dressed to look cool, regardless of what they'll really be wearing that season. At least, I think I've seen 2nd season posed shots that were like that? It's late; I could be insane. But I think the jury is still out on the Uniform of Black Leather.

A hundred bucks says we see her in a cropped shirt in the first episode. Hell, she's wearing one in the other photo! And you know, all wardrobe questions aside, I'm sure *both* Teyla and Ronon will continue to be almost totally useless as native guides. Don't get me wrong, I adore Teyla (and her little belly shirts!), but she kind of falls down on that job a lot of the time.

I want you to know, you totally had me doubting my sanity for a couple of minutes there. I kept staring at the picture, thinking, "It doesn't look like leather to me. It looks like kind of a casual, cute blue velour sort of job. Leather, really? Maybe it's suede. It could be suede. But I think it's velour! And it's definitely blue...isn't it? Would they put Sheppard in blue leather? Isn't that a little NASCAR?" And then I realized you were talking about the *other* picture.

I dunno, I'm not about the leather on John for some reason. It kind of makes him look like he's trying too hard. I like the scrunchy, it's-Saturday-and-this-is-ungodly-comfortable-and-I-might-rake-some-leaves-later sort of look he's got going on with the velour.
