WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? WHAT THE FUCK, SHOW??!?

Oh, my God. This cannot go anywhere that is good.

(Except also? It's kind of *awesome.* SO HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY WRONG that it cycles back around and becomes awesome....)

Am now exhausted by the sheer volume of WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?!? that I am experiencing. Bed now, processing later.

Oh, SHOW.

[livejournal.com profile] merryish believes that this "script" was put together as the result of a bar bet to incorporate a bar bet into a script. When they couldn't figure out what to do anyway.

Actually, the bar bet was my favorite part! Fun with engineering is a lot of the reason I initially bonded with Atlantis: I really thought it was going to be a show where smart people had to think their way out of problems on a regular basis. Which, I know -- ha ha ha. But it could have been! And this week, it practically was. *g*

It was pretty bad, wasn't it? Maybe the PTB decided that since we've had two sort-of-heavy John episodes, it was time for another Rodney episode. Otherwise, I have no idea. Keller hitting on Rodney? WTF? WHY?

I was liking it reasonably well, truthfully. And then, WHAM!! Out of nowhere, they totally violated the All-Purpose Rule (http://hth-the-first.livejournal.com/63918.html#cutid1)! I call shenanigans!

When Ronon was getting visibly bored during Blades of Glory, Keller tried to rescue the date by asking if he'd ever thought about a menage-a-trois type of thing, and he said yeah, maybe. Then she asked if he'd ever noticed the way Rodney's body was really just...there, straining under his t-shirts, and Ronon smiled and said, "And those pants." And then Keller tried to get him to watch more Will Ferrell, and Ronon said, "Hey, you have visited any of the taverns when you go off-world?" and Keller said, "Nooo, I pretty much just attend to the sick," and Ronon said, "Let me show you how to win a free beer next time you go somewhere."

And there you have it.

Yes! Yes, that is exactly what happened, and I will not be convinced otherwise. *g*

*stares*

If they were to show Keller trying to initiate a threesome with Ronon & Rodney in the next few episodes, all my faith in their dubious script-writing skills would be restored suddenly created.

I'm terrified this is going to lead to a adolescent jealousy bitchfest. On the show I mean, I assume it's already happening in some parts of the fandom.

Oh, my faith in their writing skills is such that I bet they don't think they even need to address the way they left Ronon and Keller at the end of "Quarantine." What? They're done with that storyline now! It was a cute little idea, but now they're bored with it, so obviously they don't need to wrap it up or assume it would have had any kind of effect on the characters. Come on now!

Man. These writers. I mean, in this episode, I was able to buy the way Rodney and Keller were characterizing the way things got left with Katie, because I could buy that Rodney was giving Keller bad/incomplete information, and then Keller was responding to that as if it were true. (The way things actually happened in "Quarantine," Rodney wasn't saying he needed some time for himself, not the way he made it sound to Keller. It was abundantly clear he was saying he wasn't ready for *marriage*. There's no way, in "Quarantine," Katie could have thought he was trying to break up with her--it made sense for Katie to decide the relationship was over, but only if it's because she decided she didn't want to invest herself further in someone who, to put it bluntly, so desperately needs some more therapy.) But I'm wondering if the writers think it actually went down the way Rodney and Keller said in "Trio"--they've decided they like Rodney being even more emotionally and interpersonally hapless than he was in "Quarantine," so they've just decided they can retcon it so Rodney accidentally dumped Katie.

But it'll be okay! Because Keller, whose history of being socially stunted doesn't count, since we found out about it in "Quarantine," will be able to show Rodney the light so he can learn how to get along with people. At least until he needs to forget again, just like he did after "Grace Under Pressure," "McKay and Mrs. Miller," "Tao of Rodney," and so on. Good times.

Actually, I'm afraid there won't be a jealousy bitchfest UNLESS I START ONE, because the reactions I've seen have basically been "Rodney + Jennifer = Cute or Not Cute?" I don't think this fandom, in its persistent idolization of Rodney McKay, can honestly take seriously the idea that some second-ranked backup character could or should or would be a threat to fun Rodney plotlines. If the show doesn't specifically make a point of foisting some bitter love triangle angst on us (which they very well may; they were foreshadowing left and right in this ep), my suspicion is that the fandom at large will choose to ignore the entire Ronon/Keller thread of "Quarantine." And then I will be cranky. Ier. Crankiest yet.

Sigh. Oh, show.
