Need more reasons to loathe Sarah Palin? Of course you don't! But anyway, I try to get the word around when I encounter yet another creepy underground manifestation of psychotic Dominionist conspiracies: your concise guide to Third Wave Christianity, now with still more spiritual warfare! This time, instead of all non-evangelical Christians in general, they hate me in particular, which always just makes it feel more special.

A takeaway quote, for those of you who don't click links. This is Ana Mendez, who helped organize a Third Wave "prayer expedition" to the top of Mt. Everest, which she credits with causing a major avalanche. This sounds kind of bad and scary to you and me, but apparently it took out the prayer flags that people of other religions traditionally leave on Everest, so I guess that was the point? Seems excessive, but you know how God likes the grand gesture, except when He doesn't. Anyway, Ana Mendez:

Dead infidels for the scorecard, yay! This is the kind of thing that makes me want to literally spit in the face of everyone who tells me that the problem with us liberals is that we endorse a "culture of Death" rather than the conservative Christian "culture of Life."

Not that I particularly want to get into a dick-slapping contest with these people, but honestly? If they decide their grand hobbyhorse needs to be this "confronting the Queen of Heaven" business, then you know what, good fucking luck to them. They're not the first to try it, and as they've noticed, She's still here. These fringe-of-the-fringe wackjobs think they can pray down Oya and Oshun and Yemaya -- Diana and Demeter and Athene -- Durga and Laksmi and Kali -- Kwan Yin and Ameterasu and Tara -- Hathor and Isis and Innana -- Freyja and Brigid and the Morrighan -- Sophia and Shekinah and Sancta Maria herself? Knock yourselves out, y'all. Seriously, you do not scare me on the spiritual front -- only at the polls.

My first introduction to the Pentecostal church was years ago in my small town Texas university where a student who had enrolled in my creative writing class explained seriously that because of being in the P. Church, they could not read anything about sex without losing their virginity, could not read anything about witches without being at risk for demonic possession, etc. etc. After I explained that I would not limit the fictional possibilities for the rest of the students in class, the student dropped. It's come up every once in a while since then though I now have some warning text in the syllabus.

Then there was the pagan who converted to Pentecostal who railroaded an entire class one day on how her son was trying to curse her after reading Harry Potter in school, and the schools should not teach witchcraft.

The idea of these students going on to work in schools (the second one was in the teacher education program, and I tried to raise concerns, but I think they were ignored) and voting scares me too.

Baal? Isn't that one of the bad guys in SG-1? :-) As far as I know, most of the temples in Acapulco I know of are Mayan temple ruins. Maybe that's it?

Either way, that sort of belief is pretty damn scary, but you're right -- She's still here, and She's not going anywhere. Hell, the Catholic Church was smart enough to recognize Her followers wouldn't be converted unless it incorporated Her into the Catholic faith.

There comes a point where my brain just stops accepting any of this as real. I can't wrap my mind around the idea that we're not living through some poorly conceptualized made-for-tv movie. How does this happen? How does a person like that become an accepted major political figure? How are people okay with this?

I try to think about the horrible destruction to civil liberties and freedoms on which this country should be based that have happened in the last eight years, and then I try to imagine what would happen if the republican ticket wins this election and my brain goes snap. Because, Jesus, can something this terrible really happen?

I really am overloaded by the contempt I feel for this lady and what she believes. That said, if she wants to believe fucking a frog will get her to heaven, go froggie.

However, my problem is that she wants to shove this shit down our collective throats for our own good and where the hell are the people who are supposed to expose this kind of extreme behavior? It's all a smoke and mirrors job right now.

It just stuns me senseless to even think about the catastrophe pending if that ticket is elected.

The AG church covers a fairly broad swath of beliefs, these days; we met the mildest bunch of AGers we'd ever come across up here in the North, and knew quite a few of the more stereotypical "pew-jumper" types back in our home state. Didn't loathe any of them; they're still people worth getting to know and understand (and sometimes witness to and reason with, if they'll listen.) I'm waiting to hear more about what SP actually believes, herself. I imagine that, like most church-goers, she cherry-picks what works for her, like I suspect Obama did at Wright's church. I really want to hear more from her about what her own beliefs are, and, if they're important to her, I expect she'll tell us about them. (And maybe, like Obama, those beliefs aren't actually so important to her, at all, in which case she needs to work on her affiliations, like he has.) And if she's the type who actually believes that Jews need saving and gays are automatically doomed to hell, I'll probably be sending her some annotated mail. *g* Can't hurt, and could help.
