I suspect he might've been a Lady Fairplay fan, but I would also accept Flick Falcon as a correct answer. Obviously the Gay Ghost provides the story potential to remind everyone that Steve -- who was an artist from New York definitely got the joke that that comic clearly was. Any excuse is a good excuse to better know a subculture.

I also now want the cast of Avengers to play these guys in a movie where they all team up. Scarlett Johansen as Lady Fairplay! A shirtless Chris Hemsworth as Super Slave! Tom Hiddleston as the Gay Ghost! ... I'm so happy just thinking about this.
