Great hopping Hephaestus, we've made it through the flashbacks! From here on out it's just mayhem and bloodshed, my darlings!
Is this the same deputy that Derek flirted with as a distraction back in season 1? Man, just being a woman in the same scene as Derek Hale is a fatal error, isn't it?
Wow, Stiles really goes from zero to ARE YOU THREATENING ME in about .3 seconds, doesn't he? This is what I love about Stiles; he has had it with these motherfucking werewolves in this motherfucking school, and he is not about to be pushed around just because they actually could snap him in half. This is the logical continuation of the Stiles in “Wolf's Bane” who threatened to have Derek shot even though he knew Derek could bite through his throat before he got past “Hey, Dad” – the Stiles who literally went eyeball-to-eyeball with Peter at the end of “Formality” and snarked at a heavily armed Chris Argent one episode later. I was talking with my buddy Caroline just recently about a story she was reading where Stiles was bitten instead of Scott, and I was like, sure, yeah, Stiles would have been very successful as a werewolf. But the thing is, Stiles is crazy successful as just a human adult with brains and courage and kindness – he was just going to be goddamn awesome no matter what happened to him, and woe betide any meatheaded alpha who doesn't get that yet. Scott would never have been that dude; if Stiles had been bitten instead of Scott, it would never have been Scott chomping at the bit like that to prove he's nobody's victim. I love Scott, love him with all my heart, but he's the one who needed the boost that being a werewolf gave him to find himself. Stiles doesn't and never did.
I'm becoming quite pro Allison/Isaac. I like that he's just snarky enough to keep her from always getting her own way without question, but also...pretty likely to always let her get her own way, because Allison is clearly an alpha and they'll all be happier that way.
And god help me, I'm a little bit pro Derek/Jennifer. He just looks so damn fond of her! Look at him actually smiling. Smiling! And I dunno. Jennifer, man. She's grown on me, too. We kept Peter around for three seasons, and he's totally unhinged! Why can't we keep Jennifer, goddamit?
I feel like we really needed more direct interaction between the two of them in order to sell the whole “Deucalion is fatally obsessed with Scott” angle. I'm just...not honestly buying it, although I can see him making the rational decision that Scott would be a strong addition to his pack. Hey, I know from obsessed with Scott McCall! Deucalion: Not One of Us.
Nice bit with the chalk.
Danny, I love you so much that I'm not going to laugh at you for wearing a tie with short sleeves. Oh, no, wait. I am. I am totally going to do that.
Okay, so. Hang on. The Sheriff made the connection between the 10-year-old file on the slashed-up woman and the Darach, on account of the bird sacrifice which I assume gave her the power to begin repairing herself. But I somehow missed what made him go looking for that file in the first place? He doesn't tell Melissa, and it doesn't seem related to any of the stuff that he's been talking to Stiles about. I swear to god I'm not crazy – they didn't tell us that, right? Please, if someone remembers where he got the idea for that, I'm dying to know.
It's great that we've finally solved the “I'm something!!” problem with Lydia, although it would've been nice if it were more of a centerpiece in a Lydia-focused episode. Still, redheaded banshee, I'm down with it; I have one in my own novel, in fact, so solidarity! And it's good to finally have our villain out in the open, and that she's more Peter and less Matt in terms of how entertainingly crazy she is. I think this episode sets up the increasingly manic chain of showdowns that comprise the next couple of episodes pretty well.
