Rodney/Ronon

Summary:
THE BEST DAMN 18,000 WORD NC-17 ROMANTIC COMEDY ABOUT IMPOTENCE YOU WILL READ ALL YEAR! (And by "best," we mean "only.")

From the Credit Where Credit is Due Department:
So basically, it works like this. The plot and all the really funny lines came from Caroline. Most of the sex and the talking about their feelings came from me. Rodney, Ronon, Sheppard, and everyone else in the story came from, I don't know, Cooper and Wright and some committee at Paramount. I don't even wanna know where Flesh Gordon 2: Flesh Gordon and the Cosmic Cheerleaders came from. [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn came from heaven above and delivered an excellent beta.

WARNINGS:
Mild s3 spoilers, including the usual for "Sunday." Swearing. Sex. Alcohol. Talking about feelings. Talking about Rodney's weight. Many, many italics. Sheppard using the word "penis" a lot. Manly tears -- no, just kidding about that one! There's no crying this time.

That was funny and painful and awkward all at the same time. And isn't it horrible how people don't know they've got something to be ashamed/embarassed of until someone else tells them:(

Thank you! That was something Caroline and I talked about a lot as we worked on this -- that Ronon would be dealing with some sense of personal disappointment all along, but not really a sense of *shame* until he encountered Earth cultural issues about how Giant, Hard Dick=Manhood. One of the things that was so interesting to me about the story is that inside an intimate relationship, the issues about sex can be one thing and mean one thing, but then from a social/cultural perspective, they can take on a whole new set of meanings.

I feel like I'm babbling now, but anyway -- I'm glad you thought it was funny and interesting!

That's so sweet. Not true about the no tears - *I* almost cried around the end.

aww! Thank you! I'm glad you really felt something for their situation.

I liked this. The funny parts better than the awkward impotence talks though.

I kind of thought the awkward parts *were* the funny parts! But I'm glad you found things to enjoy about the story -- thank you!

Once I got over the lack of manly tears, I enjoyed this story MADSTYLE. I loved Rodney's view of Ronon - appreciative and horny and amazed and then weirdly tender. And your Sheppard was so good - the idea that there'll only be one "us" for him being both perfect and terribly sad (and hee to his platonic teyla obsession - don't we all have one of those?) And finally yay for not having Ronon get a huge ole boner in the final paragraph - superior storytelling! Thank you both!!

Wow, it's an amazing story, one that I didn't expect, one that makes a lot of sense when on thinks about all the things Ronon went through over those 7 years. Excellent.

Date: 2007-07-13 05:03 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you! It's always very cool to know you've managed to come up with something people didn't see coming a million miles away -- that's really all due to Caroline, who's the one who persuaded me it did make sense. Glad you stuck with the story long enough to let it convince you!

OMGGGG, I have been waiting for some good R/R, and this is excellent.

(I do, of course, hope that there will someday be a sequel? You know, when Ronon is feeling, shall we say, better?)

Date: 2007-07-13 05:04 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you!

I'm holding the sequel in reserve for a day when I'm just possessed by the urge to write some porn *g*

Oh! I LOVED this! Honestly, when I saw "ROMANTIC COMEDY ABOUT IMPOTENCE," I just assumed it would be Rodney who was impotent. But no! And it was such a PLEASANT surprise, and hot and funny and I just adored it. What a lovely early morning read! *g*

Date: 2007-07-13 05:12 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Hee, I can see why you would assume that! Part of the appeal of the story for me, when Caroline pitched me the idea, was that it plays against the assumptions we tend to make about the characters: that Rondney is the one who always has the wacky, embarrassing health problems, and that Ronon is the Great Big Manly Man who probably has a huge warrior cock. Sometimes it's just great fun to be completely contrary *g* Anyway, I'm glad you liked the story -- thank you!

I assumed this would be more funny and sweet than gut-wrenching, but oh, this Ronon, and Rodney, and their vulnerability to each other. That's not to say this isn't funny and sweet - so many great lines and aww moments and the plot is a thing of genius - but I was blindsided by the more intense moments. I love this Ronon, so much - his voice is just perfect and the bits of backstory made me ache.

Re: yes, yes

Date: 2007-07-13 05:17 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you! It can be really difficult to catch the right balance between funny and intense -- you don't want the comedy to seem misplaced or the emotional bits to feel tacked-on at the end. I'm really glad that everything fell into place for you.

There's no crying this time.

Ha! *I* cried -- with laughter, and then with tears, and then with "awww, woobie!" I do want the followup story, though, the one with Mutual Satisfaction And Also Fireworks.

do you mean to imply that Sheppard knows about Ronon's impotence? Because that's sort of what I gathered ... and I wondered *how* he knew. Not that Sheppard would be the guy I'd want to be with if there were sexual issues, because *he can't talk*.

Oh man, there are so many good lines -- it's like hearing both of you do ep recaps for 18K words.

Date: 2007-07-13 05:38 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you! I think there should be a followup, too -- I thought it was really important to have the resolution in this story be about Rodney embracing the relationship for what it was and having more confidence in it, rather than having the problem vanish. But also -- who doesn't love fireworks?! And porn! So the sequel is not out of the question *g*

Re: Sheppard, toward the end of his big offworld scene with Rodney, he figures out what's really going on. And I agree with you, it is kind of sad that Rodney doesn't have anyone better to discuss his sex life with, because, wow, bottom of the barrel, there! Poor awkward Sheppard.

I'm so glad the story entertained you.

*flail*

This is hot and sweet and poignant and funny and so many other things, I don't know what to say. Except I really enjoyed it! Rodney's the perfect mix of confidence and insecurity, John is just so John I want to squeeze him (and watch the look of horror on his face) and Ronon... Ronon is wonderful.

Date: 2007-07-13 05:45 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you! One of the things I adore about writing Rodney is that he does have that swing back and forth between "I am God's gift!" and "I'm a complete mess!" It's tremendous fun to play with the tension there. And John is undeniably John, and everyone knows I think Ronon is wonderful! So basically, I'm glad you came away from the story with exactly the feelings about all of them that I wanted you to have -- it's a great compliment!

I so should have gone to bed, I have two finals tomorrow, but I don't care! I loved this story because it was all very genuine and made sense at the end, and yet I could totally sympathize with Rodney's vague disturbance about Ronon never getting an erection because of him.

Oh, and also not expecting a porn movie plot to cause a relationship crisis. Because who pays attention to the plot? I'm sort of surprised they didn't fastforward through it, even for communal viewing.

Anyway, this was an awesome, awesome story and I loved it.

Date: 2007-07-16 04:11 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
John was telling the truth -- Flesh is not really a porn movie. It's...incomprehensible, really. *g* I'm glad you liked it, and even more glad that you thought of it as genuine, because with this kind of high-concept story, if you don't work it just right, it comes out like you're trying too hard, I think. Anyway, thank you very much!

I really liked this - I love your long, plotty R/R stories and I'm so glad to see another! This is very funny, but with an edge, and it's interesting to see work that deals with the long term effects of Ronon's time as a Runner.

Omigod, I love this like WOW! I love pretty much everything about it -- the incredible sweetness, Sheppard's stunningly awkward yet endearing attempts at being a supportive friend and the way he misses hanging out with Rodney now that Rodney's got a boyfriend, the Earth-Sateda cultural differences, Ronon's shy-yet-straightforward approach to life, the believable explanation for his impotence that both made perfect sense, and just hurt ... and I loved beyond BELIEF that you didn't whip out the magical healing cock at the end and make seven years of trauma go away with good lovin'. You would not believe how I've been craving slash where both partners don't jump immediately into mutually satisfying, mind-blowing sex, slash in which sex and even love are not a cure-all for everything that ails a person. Plus, there's something just unspeakably hot to me about a relationship in which the sexual issues are not easily curable, if at all, and yet the relationship is strong enough to endure. Um, have I mentioned how awesome this story is? *g*

Date: 2007-07-16 04:21 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you so much! You pretty much hit on all the parts of the story I cared about most, too, so I feel like I've definitely succeeded in putting across what I wanted to. I think the wealth of wonderful smut that fandom produces should have, as one of its side effects, the power to kind of free us up to write slash without sex or that uses sex in not-for-the-readers-sexy-gratification ways -- remember when people used to sit around and wonder, if there was no sex, was it really slash? Thankfully, I haven't heard anyone bring that up for a long time. Now that fandom will truly never run out of hot, sexy pr0n, I feel like there's room to tell stories about other parts of relationships, too -- and I'm very glad there's an audience for those stories, like you!

I'll have to admit that I'm totally onboard with "THE BEST DAMN 18,000 WORD NC-17 ROMANTIC COMEDY ABOUT IMPOTENCE YOU WILL READ ALL YEAR! (And by "best," we mean "only.")"

Awesomely hilarious, tender, sweet and actually kind of thoughtful. The look on Sheppard's face during Rodney's Theoretical Penis conversation, and when he accuses Rodney of breaking Ronon--never described, god I can see them. I love the way that Rodney sees Ronon, all the parts that no one else gets to see or have.

Just wonderful!

Date: 2007-07-16 04:28 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
Thank you! One of the things Caroline and I really wanted to do was to have this two-sidedness to their sexual relationship for Rodney -- that he was frustrated by his thwarted expectations and his fears about why that is, but at the same time, they had this sensuality and intimacy that made the sex actually *good sex.* I'm glad that you picked up on that vibe, as well as the other part -- because, yeah, another thing we really wanted to do was make John really, miserably uncomfortable. Always funny! *g* Thanks again for the comment.

This was just the sweetest goddamned thing. Ronon was heartbreaking and lovely and a pain in the ass, and Rodney kept waiting to be heartbroken and hoping it wouldn't happen, and John was so JOHN, and really, this was so tender and so kind.

Thank-you for writing Rodney/Ronon. It's my favorite SGA pairing and there isn't enough of it. Thank-you for writing it first time and lengthy - with humor, angst, heat, and sweetness. I sincerely enjoyed this.

Date: 2007-07-16 04:32 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
I'm so glad! It is a great pairing; there's so much to play with, and such a perfect mix of opposites-attract and then really, them being very much alike in other ways. I think that's how good relationships often are, so my general thought about them in canon is that they're not involved, but they probably should be! *g* Thank you so much for commenting.

Date: 2007-07-14 01:06 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] whetherwoman.livejournal.com
So I was kinda turned off by the summary, because, you know, embarrassment squick... but I thought to myself, "I'll just read the first paragraph or something and see if I like it." And I am so glad I did because I totally got drawn in and it is awesome! It's not a "HA HA PEOPLE'S PROBLEMS ARE FUNNY" story, it is exactly the opposite! It's a story about multi-dimensional people relating to each other. I love how you handled impotence as something that exists, doesn't control the sexual or romantic aspects of the relationship, but is just part of it like any other aspect of a person.

Date: 2007-07-16 04:39 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] hth-the-first.livejournal.com
You don't know how much I appreciate this comment. One of my grievances with SGA is that it keeps going back to that really dumb, juvenile type of humor that exists to point and laugh at people when they're legitimately not at their best -- so in a way, if it had been the kind of story you feared it was, it probably would have been more canonical. *g* But, you know, I think it only takes a slight adjustment to save that formula, because people's problems *are* funny -- I mean, life is funny, and God knows that's what's saved me many times when things are going dreadfully wrong: you have to sit back for a minute and laugh. My mother's used to say "you might as well laugh as cry" when things started going pear-shaped, and that's advice that's held up awfully well over the years. *g* It's very human, I think, and I find stories that can find the humor amidst the chaos more humanizing and believable than sturm-und-drang OTT angst. Anyway, I'm glad this hit a mix of humor and seriousness that balanced well for you in that way -- and I'm really glad and impressed that you took a chance on a story you weren't sure about! I think fandom would be a more interesting place if people challeged themselves a little more like that. Thank you.
